Summertime is finally here, but with it comes peak air conditioning season. If your AC is aging or has proven otherwise unreliable, now’s the time to consider upgrading to a more energy-efficient option.
Not sure what to look for? Here are four of the latest heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) trends you should consider.
1. Smart Thermostats
What if you could program your thermostat just by logging into an app on your smartphone or tablet? With a smart thermostat, you can. Monitor your energy usage, schedule useful maintenance reminders or reset the temperature from wherever you happen to be. Some systems even learn your household routines and adapt your energy settings accordingly for maximum efficiency.
2. Zoning Systems
Is the temperature setting a constant cause of discussion in your home? End those disagreements with a zoning system. By adding dampers to your ductwork, an HVAC professional can create multiple “zones” throughout your home, each with its own unique thermostat, so you can keep the kitchen cool and the den warmer.
3. Variable-Speed Fans
If you’re looking for something to give your current AC system a boost, consider a variable-speed fan that will allow your system to run at different speeds. For example, when daytime temperatures are at their peak, you can use a higher setting to maintain household comfort. But during the night, when temperatures are cooler, you can run the fan on a lower, more energy-efficient setting.
4. Heat Pumps
To cool your home, an air-source heat pump extracts warmth from the indoor air and moves it outdoors. But it can also heat your home by moving outdoor heat into the home during the winter using approximately 50% less electricity. Geothermal heat pumps can perform these same functions, but during the winter they source their heat from the ground, further increasing efficiency and savings.
